The above needs a comment. No, your family aren't the victims here. The Ratermans lost their child to a particularly brutal murder. Their family was torn apart. Your family were embarrassed to find out that you, the son of a former sheriff, were involved in that brutal murder of a child.
One of these things is not like the other.

ASTORIA, ORE. ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) _ A body found near this coastal town was identified Monday as that of a 15- year-old girl whose disappearance nearly six weeks ago spurred a search of beaches and logging roads by hundreds of volunteers.
Authorities used dental records to identify the remains of Dorene Raterman, said Dr. Larry Lewman, state medical examiner in Portland.
Dorene disappeared June 15 after leaving her parents a note saying she was taking a bicycle ride to Del Ray Beach, a half-mile from her family's home in Gearhart, on the northern Oregon coast, about 75 miles west of Portland.
Within days, state police determined she had been killed at the beach, and two men were arrested in connection with her death.
Her body was found Sunday by motorcyclists riding in a brushy area about 16 miles east of Astoria. An autopy was planned for Tuesday.
The girl's disappearance and the arrests angered some of the 970 residents of Gearhart. One of the suspects wore a bulletproof vest to a court appearance, and a judge held the other's arraignment secretly because he feared for the suspect's safety.
Police got their first break in the case when a man reported seeing a girl on a bicycle and two men in a gold sports car near the beach the night she disappeared. The description of the car led them to Tiac K. Eastman, 25, of Astoria, son of a former county sheriff.
Eastman admitted he and Anthony Mullins, 25, both dishwashers at a nearby hotel, had driven to the beach that night in Eastman's car to drink beer and talk, and saw the girl there, according to a court affidavit.
The affidavit said Eastman told police that Mullins strangled the girl.
Mullins, who denies Eastman's allegation, was charged with kidnapping and murdering the girl. Eastman was charged with hindering prosecution for allegedly driving Mullins from the scene of the slaying. Both are in jail.
